The Big Issue Kenya is a charity organization that publishes a magazine sold by deprived, jobless or otherwise disadvantaged people who are paid a percentage of the magazine’s cover price. We are a member of the International Network of Street Papers (INSP), and our magazine/social project is modelled on the “street newspaper” concept that has been used for decades to empower homeless people in many Western by giving them a chance to work and earn a living instead of begging or resorting to crime in order to meet their basic needs. We at the moment support vendors from the Kibera, Korogocho and Mathare slums, and they earn 50% of the cover price for each copy they manage to sell. Each vendor works with us for a maximum of two years, after which he or she is expected to be self sufficient We help them achieve this self-sufficiency by giving them monthly trainings on topics like savings, entrepreneurship, computer skills and small business.
